Spider-Man: Miles Morales is a great addition to the Spider-Man gaming franchise. Taking on the role of Miles provides a very different experience than that of Peter Parker. Miles is looser with his combat and less experienced when it comes to his swinging.

For those worried that Sony Worldwide Studios and Insomniac Games may not have given as much time and energy to the development of the PS4 version, worry not because just as much love went into it as the next-generation version.

For all intense and purposes, Miles Morales runs on par if not better than the original Spider-Man did when it was released. It is a gorgeous game with some amazing lighting and particle effects. Set during the wintertime in New York, the city is preparing for the holidays, so you’ll see plenty of holiday lights that light up the city.

A Gorgeous Game With Amazing Particle Effects

One of the most talked-about features of next-generation is Ray Tracing and what it’s capable of when it comes to reflections and how light is manipulated. This is obviously a difference you’ll find between the two versions of the game. The PS4 version though still gorgeous doesn’t produce the same soft natural lighting that’s found with Ray Tracing.

When hanging out on top of a rooftop, you can clearly see the difference between the natural lighting that’s produced. During sunset on the PS5, you get reddish light from a sunset illuminating the city.

In the PS4 version, the lighting is harder and bolder. The shadows from buildings are more defined, and distant objects don’t provide realistic shadows instead, settling on less lighting coming into a specific location.

While swinging through the city, I also noticed that in the PS4 version, I got more motion blur. This could help keep the game at a solid frame rate, but this motion blur was not noticeable on the PS5.

Runs At An Almost Perfect 30 Frames Per Second With Slight Hiccups

Speaking of Framerate, the PS5 version provides two gameplay modes. Performance: runs the game at 60 FPS without Ray Tracing and Fidelity: A solid 30 FPS with Ray Tracing turned on. The PS4 version unfortunately only comes with a standard mode though: solid 30 FPS with no Ray Tracing.

Much like the original Spider-Man, Miles Morales still runs incredibly well at 30 FPS. I only noticed a few hiccups and frame drops mostly when pulling off the most spectacular attacks and when there are too many particle effects happening on screen at once. It didn’t happen often and wasn’t as noticeable as you may think.

The biggest difference between the two versions comes with the games loading times. It’s long been known just how fast games can load on the PS5, but the difference in Miles Morales is staggering. Doing a test from the main menu to the gameplay Miles Morales took about 4.23 seconds to load on the PS5. The same test was done on the PS4, and it took about 35 seconds to load.

The difference is astronomical, but on a positive note, Miles does take about ten seconds less to load than the original Spider-Man on PS4, which is a nice improvement over Insomniac’s last entry.

If You Loved Spider-Man, You’d Love Miles Morales Even More

Spider-Man: Miles Morales on the PS4 is in no way a bad game. In fact, it’s a better game than the original Spider-Man. With many more practical effects going on, improved animation systems, and the including of winter weather and a lot more of those puddles everyone talked about, Miles Morales is another spectacular achievement from Sony Worldwide Studios in what some people consider the end of the console’s life cycle.

When you are playing outside the main story, Peter is able to complete side missions that will help you to unlock additional content and collectible items. Combat focuses on chaining attacks together and using the environment and webs to incapacitate numerous foes while avoiding damage.

If you have played Batman Arkham games, you will find a lot of similarities between the games. For Arkham trilogy, we had a grand finale in the form of Arkham Knight open world game. For Spider-man, we have a grand opening with this awesome open world game. You zip around NYC with webs instead of a flying cape, but you’re still navigating skyscrapers from on high rather than running around the ground. Fighting with webs and web-based gadgets is different, but still mechanically similar, to Batman’s array of toys. Web-swinging through the city is glorious, as it entails swinging, dashing forward, doing cool tricks in the air, running up and along walls and zipping to perches.

This universe’s Peter Parker is twenty three years old lab research assistant who gains superhuman abilities after being bitten by a genetically-modified spider. Assuming a secret identity as the superhero Spider-Man, Peter uses these abilities to protect the residents of New York City. Eight years into his superhero career, Peter has become an experienced crime fighter but struggles to balance his superhero and personal lives. Peter is assisted by Daily Bugle reporter Mary Jane Watson, his ex-girlfriend, and NYPD Captain Yuri Watanabe. In his civilian life, Peter is supported by his Aunt May who volunteers at the F.E.A.S.T. homeless shelter run by philanthropist Martin Li. Peter is employed by his friend and mentor, the respected scientist Dr. Otto Octavius who is struggling to find financing for his research laboratory.

In the prologue, you will fight against notorious Wilson Fisk, better known as Kingpin. Following Wilson Fisk’s capture by Spider-Man, the mysterious gang of masked Demons begin seizing Fisk’s illicit assets. Mary Jane and Spider-Man learn that the Demons are seeking something called Devil’s Breath. With the aid of Officer Jefferson Davis, Spider-Man thwarts a Demon attack. Davis is lauded for his heroism at a re-election event for Mayor Norman Osborn. The Demons attack the event, killing Davis and many other attendees. Peter witnesses their leader Martin Li transforming into Mister Negative, but is knocked unconscious before he can intervene. Following the attack, Osborn hires Silver Sablinova and Sable International to supplant the police. Peter befriends Davis’ son Miles and persuades him to volunteer at F.E.A.S.T.

Peter and Otto Octavius continue their research into advanced prosthetic limbs, but Osborn withdraws their funding in an attempt to force Octavius to work for his mega-corporation Oscorp. While searching for Li, Spider-Man discovers that Devil’s Breath is a lethal, virulent bioweapon inadvertently created by Oscorp while developing a cure for genetic diseases. Li locates and steals the only sample of Devil’s Breath and threatens to release it unless Osborn surrenders to him. Li is foiled by Mary Jane and Spider-Man, Devil’s Breath is secured, and Li is incarcerated at a nearby maximum-security prison called the Raft.

Movement is glorious and that simply can’t be overstated. Moving about the expansive, richly detailed open-world burgh of Manhattan is a joy. This is a world tied directly to the MCU films though in an alternate universe where Spidey himself is older and more experienced. There’s not much to say about the game’s graphics other than they’re lovely. Animations, in particular, are incredibly good and tight, making movement and combat both visually pleasing and satisfying to play. The city is beautiful. There’s a day and night cycle of sorts so you get to play in Manhattan in light and dark, sunshine and rain. The cut scenes are likewise outstanding. Combat is fun and innovative, continuing the Arkham series high points. You can pull of combos, tinker around with your array of web and tech-based gadgets, and wreak havoc on your unwitting foes. As you unlock your skill tree and gadgets, combat becomes far more varied and interesting.
